On June 17 and 18, Oradea Fortress in northwestern Romania will host the sixth edition of UNCHAIN, a two-day festival that has positioned itself as the leading fintech gathering in Central and Eastern Europe. With Visa as main partner, a program spanning AI in banking, payments infrastructure, digital assets, and insurtech, and a startup tournament running alongside the main agenda, the event is one of the more serious gatherings the region produces.
What UNCHAIN Actually Is
UNCHAIN describes itself as the Davos of CEE fintech, and the comparison holds up better than most event marketing claims. The festival brings together bank executives, fintech founders, investors, regulators, and payment infrastructure companies for two days of structured content and networking inside a renovated medieval fortress that serves as both backdrop and venue. The 2026 edition runs across a main stage, two focus stages, a startup corner, an expo area, and dedicated roundtable spaces, all within the walls of Oradea Fortress.
The content agenda covers the topics that are genuinely shaping financial services in the region right now: AI-driven analytics and fraud prevention, payments 3.0 and real-time infrastructure, embedded finance, open banking regulation across EU markets, digital banking transformation, insurtech, green finance, and blockchain applications in settlement and custody. The roundtable format is worth noting specifically, as these sessions are designed to produce industry white papers rather than the usual slide decks that disappear after a conference ends.
Who Is Behind the Event
The partner list for 2026 reflects the event’s position in the regional market. Visa has been main partner since 2022. Banking partners include Raiffeisen Bank, BRD Groupe Société Générale, and Banca Transilvania, the largest bank in Romania and in Southeast Europe. Gold partners include Global Payments, BLIK, and Payten. Sponsors include Amazon Web Services, Worldline, SIBS Romania, Noda, Finshape, and a range of specialist fintech infrastructure companies operating across the region. The breadth of institutional involvement is a reasonable signal that the conversations happening at the event matter to organisations that have budgets to protect.
The startup competition, known as the Tournament, adds a pitch competition dimension for early-stage companies, with investors in attendance and a format that moves faster than most demo days.
The Matchmaking Layer
One of the structural differences between UNCHAIN and a standard conference is the 1-to-1 matchmaking system, which allows attendees to pre-schedule meetings before arriving in Oradea. For founders looking for partners, executives assessing vendor options, or investors running due diligence on regional companies, this turns what would otherwise be a networking lottery into something closer to a structured process. The system is open to all registered delegates.
Getting There
Oradea is accessible via Oradea International Airport, which has expanded its terminal capacity in recent years and connects to major European hubs. LOT Polish Airlines is a logistics partner of the event, and the festival has travel infrastructure in place including hotel recommendations and transfers for international delegates. The fortress itself is in the city centre, which means the event is walkable from most accommodation in Oradea.
